The 108 000 Africa Genomes Project brings our purpose into a continental vision. Its purpose is not to treat Africa as one uniform population, but to connect the strengths of a diverse continent while respecting each country’s priorities, communities and scientific contribution.
Working with the Africa and Global Precision Medicine Consortium, we are building a framework for African-led discovery, responsible data stewardship and meaningful benefit sharing. At its heart is Ubuntu: the understanding that our progress is connected.

Representation in research matters. But representation alone is not the destination. Our vision is for African scientists and institutions to help determine research priorities, lead investigations, receive recognition for their contributions and participate meaningfully in the development of resulting discoveries and intellectual property.
Local governance
We advocate for genomic data to be held and governed locally, with accountable African-led oversight and clearly defined conditions for access and use.
Country-level stewardship
Our research model is being developed around country-level stewardship, appropriate ethical review and collaboration that respects the communities from which knowledge emerges.

Benefit must be reflected in stronger laboratories, skilled professionals, research leadership, diagnostic innovation, sustainable employment and more accessible healthcare — not only in publications.

The future we are working towards depends on the trust of the people who choose to be part of it. Genomic information is personal. Our approach places informed consent, confidentiality, clear communication and responsible stewardship at the centre of both clinical services and research development.
Choosing a clinical test must not be treated as automatic agreement to participate in research. Research participation requires its own appropriate consent and governance. We also believe scientific integrity means being clear about uncertainty — the limitations of a result must be communicated alongside its potential value.
African ownership is not simply a claim to control. It is a responsibility to protect people, respect their choices and ensure that scientific desire remains accountable to human benefit.
